Strawn & Sampson’s history of Pine Brook Country Club was written by David Gould, the author of Q School Confidential and The Golfers Code. The former Executive Editor of Travel + Leisure Golf and the Chief Editor of LINKS Magazine, David crafted an elegant narrative commemorating Pine Brook’s centennial. Boston’s contributions to golf history—from the founding of the eponymous Country Club in neighboring Brookline to recruiting Donald Ross from Dornoch to Oakley Country Club to the epic saga of the teenaged amateur Francis Ouimet’s taking down the great English professionals at the 1913 US Open—provide the scaffolding for Gould’s vivid account of Pine Brook’s history. From the acquisition of the land and the role of course designer Wayne Styles to the restoration undertaken by Ron Forse in the 21st century, Gould’s wide-ranging narrative captures the essence of Pine Brook’s culture and its impact on the life of its members.
Working closely with Gould, the Strawn & Sampson team designed and published a book presented to Pine Brook’s members as a “fascinating story recounted through deep research and first-hand accounts of past and present members and staff.” By capturing the club’s spirit, as a Pine Brook president noted, Pine Brooks’ history “preserves and amplifies our singular past. Pine Brook will continue to thrive because the ethical strength inherent in the principles of its founder so evidently endures.”
"Strawn & Sampson did a fantastic job uncovering the long history of Pine Brook Country Club and putting it into words. Everybody learned many things we didn't know about our own club, and the membership got a beautiful commemorative book to celebrate our 100th anniversary."
